Stay away from the Budhi Gandaki, and from the Trishuli below Benighat, until officials say the water has passed. Residents saw the flow stop and start again and DHM says levels are still fluctuating, so a river that has dropped is not yet a safe one. Do not go to the bank to watch or film.

Where

Gorkha took the flood; Dhading lies across the river at Arughat and Benighat. Chitwan and Nawalparasi are shaded for DHM’s downstream warning, not for reported damage. The line follows the water down the valley.

First-day warnings. They change through the day — follow the linked source for the current position, and DHM and the District Administration Office Gorkha above anything here.

Background

What happened

Early on Sunday 11 October 2026 (25 Asoj 2083) a flash flood came down the Budhi Gandaki river in northern Gorkha. Residents and tourists began fleeing from around 4 am after hearing a loud roar from the tributaries upstream.

The water swept through Chumnubri and Dharche rural municipalities and on past Arughat, carrying away houses in the riverbed settlements at Jagat, Salleri and Paiyu, the construction camp of the Budhi Gandaki hydropower project at Salleri, and at least six bridges, including the bridge at Arughat that links Gorkha and Dhading.

The preliminary account is that a landslide blocked the river upstream and the blockage then burst. Accounts differ on where. A Nepali Army reconnaissance team reported a dry landslide blocking the flow at Philim, Chumnubri-3. DHM said a landslide near Chumchet may have blocked a tributary, and other reports place it between Lokpa and Chumling. As of midday on 11 October the cause had not been officially confirmed, and an Army drone team had been sent upstream to establish it.

We report the cause only as far as sources support it. The figures on this desk are first-day reports and they disagree; each is shown with who gave it.
