Guide to natural-hazard triggers and severity thresholds
Magnitude and DepthSeismic
MeaningThe energy released by an earthquake, and how far below the surface it ruptured.
Why it mattersDepth matters as much as magnitude. A shallow M5 under a populated valley does more damage than a deep M6 out under the Himalaya.
Not proof ofNot a damage forecast. Building stock, soil and time of day drive the human cost.
ExampleThe 2015 Gorkha earthquake was M7.8 at roughly 8km depth — shallow, which is why the shaking was so destructive.
Seismic SequenceSeismic
MeaningA cluster of events in a short window, counted here over 24 hours and 7 days.
Why it mattersShallow clusters precede damaging events more often than deep isolated ones do. The count is a preparedness trigger, not a prediction.
Not proof ofNot an earthquake forecast. No method predicts the timing of a large rupture.
Example5+ events in 24h with two or more shallow M4.5+ ruptures is the threshold Atlas flags.
5-Day RainfallHydro-met
MeaningCumulative forecast rainfall over the next five days at each monitored city.
Why it mattersNepal’s hill slopes fail on cumulative saturation, not on any single day’s total. Landslide risk keeps climbing for days after the rain stops.
Not proof ofNot an official DHM warning. It is model output from Open-Meteo.
ExampleAbove 200mm over five days is the point Atlas treats as a saturation threshold.
Flood / Landslide RiskHydro-met
MeaningRaised when forecast daily rainfall crosses 100mm in monsoon season, or 50mm outside it.
Why it matters100mm/day is broadly the threshold Nepal’s DHM treats as heavy rainfall. Terai inundation and hill road closures follow on different timelines.
Not proof ofNot a district-level warning. Confirm against DHM before issuing public guidance.
ExampleAn alert at Nepalgunj means Terai inundation risk; the same alert at Pokhara means slope failure risk.
Monsoon SeasonHydro-met
MeaningJune through September, when Nepal receives roughly 80% of its annual rainfall.
Why it mattersIt sets the baseline. 100mm of rain in July is a monsoon day; the same in December is not.
Not proof ofNot itself an alert. It is the seasonal context every rainfall reading is scored against.
ExampleAtlas raises its heavy-rain threshold from 50mm to 100mm once monsoon season is active.
FRPFire
MeaningFire Radiative Power. The intensity of one specific FIRMS hotspot, measured in megawatts.
Why it mattersHigher FRP usually means a hotter, larger, or more energetic fire at that exact point.
Not proof ofNot the intensity of the whole region, and not a measure of area burned.
ExampleFRP 92.3 MW describes one hotspot, while Total 1,451 describes the whole regional detection count.
Night DetectionsFire
MeaningThermal detections tagged as occurring at night inside the regional FIRMS bucket.
Why it mattersNighttime heat is more noteworthy than daytime: it is less likely to be routine agricultural burning, and it means the fire is running unchecked.
Not proof ofNot a count of separate fires. One large fire produces many detections.
ExampleNight 140 of 1,451 regional detections means the fire kept burning past dark.
US AQIAir Quality
MeaningThe US EPA air quality index computed from PM2.5 and PM10, the scale Nepali outlets and embassies quote.
Why it mattersKathmandu sits in a bowl. Winter inversion and spring fire smoke both get trapped, and the valley regularly ranks among the world’s most polluted cities.
Not proof ofNot a measure of any single pollutant, and not a personal exposure reading.
ExampleAQI above 150 is Unhealthy for everyone, not only sensitive groups.
GLOFCryosphere
MeaningGlacial Lake Outburst Flood — the sudden release of water from a moraine-dammed glacial lake.
Why it mattersNepal has dozens of lakes rated potentially dangerous. A GLOF arrives as a wall of water and debris with little or no warning downstream.
Not proof ofNot a monsoon flood. GLOFs can occur in clear weather and outside the rainy season.
ExampleThe 2021 Melamchi flood carried debris that took out infrastructure far downstream of the source.
Active DisasterResponse
MeaningA disaster listed as active for Nepal by UN OCHA on ReliefWeb.
Why it mattersIt means formal response operations and cluster coordination are already standing. New district requests should route through them.
Not proof ofNot a measure of severity, and not a live count of affected people.
ExampleA listed active disaster is where you look first before opening a parallel operation.
Sweep DeltaPlatform
MeaningThe change summary between the current sweep and the previous one — new, escalated, and de-escalated signals.
Why it mattersUseful for spotting what changed recently instead of re-reading the full dashboard from scratch.
Not proof ofNot a full risk model. It is a directional change layer on top of the raw hazard signals.
ExampleA delta marked risk-off with several new and escalated items means the latest sweep materially worsened the hazard picture.
Model Output vs WarningPlatform
MeaningAtlas reads satellite feeds and weather models directly. It does not republish official warnings.
Why it mattersAn Atlas alert is a reason to check DHM, NDRRMA or the National Seismological Centre — never a substitute for them.
Not proof ofNot an authoritative warning, and not a basis for public evacuation guidance on its own.
ExampleA Flood / Landslide Risk alert should send you to the DHM bulletin before any district advisory goes out.
ANCODA ATLAS • NATURAL HAZARD MONITORING • NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR DHM, NDRRMA OR NSC WARNINGS
